This unit is about the history of the profession of sign language interpreting. It’s important to understand the basics of interpreting in general as a profession and also to know the history of RID and other interpreting organizations that are out there. As it comes to RID basically you need to understand the by-laws, the different certifications, the certification process, and the history of the organization. It’s also important to understand the different laws that provide for sign language interpreting services including the Rehab Act of 1973, Public Law 94142 from 1975 and of course the Americans with Disabilities Act. In this unit we’ll also touch on some basic terminology to do with sign language interpreting and some other key topics that you’ll need to know as a foundation for the rest of the course.
