This unit is all about the history of the profession — the history of sign language interpreting. So first think about what you already know about the history of the profession, the history of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, all of the background that’s relevant to our careers. Some of the questions you might ask yourself are: How did this work come to be a profession? How has our profession changed over the years? What exactly does RID do and how does it function? Another question is What other sign language interpreting organizations are there out there? What laws mandate the provision of sign language interpreting? That’s another important question because you may need to answer it as part of yourself advocacy and advocacy for interpreting situations. So the first thing you should do is take a moment to think about those questions and how well, how thoroughly you can answer them.
