This unit is about American Deaf history and culture. Some of the questions you should ask yourself are how much do interpreters need to know about deaf culture and history? What is the interpreter’s social role in deaf society? How has American Deaf Society been polarized, stratified and exclusionary toward women and minority throughout history? In what ways is it improving? What still needs work? Another questions that’s bit more complex is what is audism? What is dis-conscious audism? What internalized audism? What is the difference between deafness and deafhood? Deafhood is a term coined by Paddy Ladd, a deaf man from England who has studied deaf identity.
These are some of the important questions that you’ll want to keep in mind as you work through this unit.
